Briefly
Acupuncture significantly reduces hot flushes and menopausal symptoms, this has been demonstrated by thousands of years of clinical observation. In Geneva, Santé & Méridiens practice offers personalized treatments, certified by the RME and ASCA foundation, and reimbursed by certain supplementary insurance schemes. An improvement is generally observed after 5 to 10 sessions, with effects lasting 3 to 6 months after the end of treatment.
Do you identify with these symptoms?
Women’s experiences of menopause
Menopause affects 100 per cent of women. But debilitating symptoms are not inevitable; they indicate an imbalance that traditional Chinese medicine can identify and address.
💧
Waking up drenched, having to change the sheets, unable to get any rest. Fatigue that builds up week after week.
😤
Irritability & mood
Mood swings, anxiety, a feeling of no longer recognising oneself. Often linked to hormonal imbalance.
😴
Difficulty falling asleep, waking up at 3 am, non-restorative sleep. Fatigue sets in and persists.
The perspective of Chinese medicine
Why your body goes into overdrive, and how to deal with it
In Chinese medicine, a woman follows a 7-year cycle. At the age of 49 (7×7), Jing (the vital essence) naturally declines. This decline reduces Kidney Yin, the body’s cooling energy. Deprived of its counterbalance, Yang, which is hot and rising, rises towards the upper body and causes hot flushes, anxiety, and other symptoms.
This is not a disorder to be fought, it is an energetic transition to be supported. By nourishing Kidney Yin and grounding Yang, acupuncture creates the conditions for a more peaceful menopause.

What does science say?
Effectiveness proven by meta-analyses
Acupuncture is no longer just a tradition; it has been validated by clinical trials. Here are a few studies that analyse the observed effects of acupuncture from the perspective of modern research.
Meta-analysis · Chiu et al. — Menopause (NAMS), 2015 · 12 clinical trials
Acupuncture significantly reduces the frequency and severity of hot flushes, as well as sleep disturbances and overall quality of life, in women undergoing natural menopause. (DOI: 10.1097/GME.0000000000000260)
Danish clinical trial — BMJ Open · 70 patients
After just 3 weeks of treatment (1 session per week), participants reported a significant reduction in hot flushes. The effects persisted 26 weeks after the end of treatment, i.e. for more than 6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions
Your questions about acupuncture and the menopause
Is acupuncture effective against hot flushes?
Yes, it can be of great support — Beyond clinical observation, this has been demonstrated by several meta-analyses. A meta-analysis published in the journal Menopause (Chiu et al., 2015, 12 clinical trials) concluded that acupuncture significantly reduces the frequency and severity of hot flushes. The effects last for 3 to 6 months after the end of treatment.
How many sessions are needed to see results?
A significant improvement is generally observed after 5 to 10 sessions. Some patients notice an initial effect as early as the first 2 to 3 sessions, particularly in terms of sleep. A full course of treatment comprises 8 to 12 sessions, at a rate of one per week.
Can acupuncture replace HRT (hormone replacement therapy)?
Acupuncture does not replace HRT when the latter is medically indicated. It is a viable alternative for women who cannot or do not wish to use hormones. It can also be used alongside HRT.
Are acupuncture sessions for the menopause covered by insurance in Switzerland?
Yes. In Switzerland, acupuncture carried out by a therapist certified by the RME or ASCA may be covered by supplementary insurance. Nour Chaabane at Santé & Méridiens practice is RME and ASCA certified. Coverage depends on your policy; please check with your insurer and/or therapist.
Can perimenopause also be treated with acupuncture?
Yes — and it’s actually the best time to start. During perimenopause (usually between the ages of 40 and 50), cycles become irregular and the first symptoms appear. Acupuncture can help stabilise this transition and reduce the severity of the symptoms that will set in during the menopause.
